Can you imagine a future where all energy is renewable and clean? The scientists at the EU’s Joint Research Centre did just that in a recently published report.
The researchers analysed a 2050 scenario where the dominant sources are wind and solar power, and found that a large-scale deployment of electrolysers would not just enable the replacement of fossil fuels in transport and industry, but also help stabilise the grid by operating flexibly, reversing into fuel-cell operation to provide peaks, and in general compensating for the uncontrollable nature of renewable sources.
